🇺🇸 Red, White & Village Blue 🎆

There's something special about the Fourth of July. The smell of backyard barbecues, neighborhood parades, fireworks lighting up the evening sky, and spending time with family and friends all remind us why this holiday is one of America's favorites.

Here at Village D-Lights, we couldn't think of a better way to celebrate than by building a patriotic village.

Like so many village projects, this one started with the best of intentions. The original plan was a simple three-building display to celebrate Independence Day. But somewhere along the way, that modest idea grew into a six-foot-long patriotic village complete with multiple levels, winding streets, and plenty of red, white, and blue. Funny how villages have a way of making their own plans!

I challenged myself to use nearly every patriotic-themed collection available from Dept. 56. American Pride became the heart of the display, while Snow Village created a charming small-town neighborhood filled with tree-lined streets and classic Americana. I even borrowed a few buildings from Dickens' Village to represent the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. I only wish I had a custom "National Zoo" sign to complete the scene!

Blending the different collections took a little creativity since each series has its own scale and personality. By using different elevations, landscaping, and carefully placed trees, I was able to create a display that feels surprisingly cohesive. Sometimes a little forced perspective can work wonders.

Of course, no village project is complete without at least one unexpected trip to the hobby store! Halfway through the build I realized I had completely run out of static grass. Thankfully, Clayton's Collectibles in downtown Cumberland, Md came to the rescue with a Woodland Scenics product that worked. It's always a pleasure supporting local hobby shops that continue to support our hobby.

The finished display imagines a patriotic Washington, D.C., complete with iconic landmarks, welcoming neighborhoods, shady streets, and all the charm of an American summer. More than anything, it reminds me that villages aren't just for Christmas. With a little imagination, they can help us celebrate every season, every holiday, and every memory we create throughout the year.
